Dear Reader,
I live in Encino, part of the greater Los Angeles area, and this has been one of the most challenging weeks of my life. Like many, I’ve been facing the devastating impact of wildfires in our community. I’m incredibly fortunate that my home remains standing, and our neighborhood was spared.
Last Friday, as the fire came dangerously close, my family, our dog, and a visiting friend from out of the country made the difficult decision to evacuate. We found refuge in a beachside hotel about an hour away. Now back home, I’ve kept everything packed by the door, ready to go if the winds pick up and we need to evacuate again.
On Tuesday, dear friends of ours who had evacuated from the Palisades fire shared heartbreaking news: their house had burned down. Watching them process the loss of their home and all the memories it held has been devastating. Across the community, so many others have lost homes, jobs, businesses, and their sense of stability.
In the midst of this, I’ve found comfort and hope in supporting the incredible firefighters working tirelessly day and night to keep us safe. I am extremely grateful for our first responders and for everyone in our community who has stepped up—collecting clothing and household goods, donating time and money, and feeding first responders.
I feel proud and fortunate to live among people who are so willing to support one another in times of crisis. These acts of kindness and solidarity are a reminder of the strength and resilience of our community.
If you or someone you know is navigating the emotional weight of these events, know that you’re not alone. My thoughts are with everyone affected by these fires, and I encourage you to reach out for support if needed.
